Some Things You May Not Know About Dimmable LEDs
For a form of technology that’s still relatively new, LEDs have come a long way in a very short space of time. Why, only a few years ago, LEDs were being used primarily as those little lights that tell you when your telly is on standby. But now, they’re everywhere and many of them can be dimmed! So, here’s some info about which ones can and which can’t be dimmed.
Choose The Right Bulb!
Firstly, you need to ensure that the LED light bulb you’re about to purchase is in fact dimmable! All the LED bulbs we sell here at LED Monkey are clearly marked as “Dimmable” or “Non-Dimmable” so you won’t be able to make a mistake or choose the wrong type.
Halogen light sources can be dimmed down by 95%. However, the LED light bulbs we stock can be dimmed to around 10% of their full lumen-brightness. At this level, the difference really is negligible.
Plus, our LED bulbs produce a better light quality with an extremely high CRI (Colour Rendering Index) of 80. So, the very slight difference will be even further offset!
No Loss of Brightness!
Also, our dimmable LED bulbs will generate just the same number of lumens as our non-dimmable ones. Therefore, there’s no need for you to worry about a LoL (Loss of Luminosity – we just made that acronym up!)
And don’t forget that our incredibly versatile range of LED strip lights are also eminently dimmable, using a special 12V dimmer switch. This means you’ll be able to take full advantage of their amazing 50,000 to 100,000 lifespan and energy-saving capabilities, too!
Your Dimmer Switches
If your home or business premises is already equipped with dimmer switches, please ensure they’re LED-friendly. LED lights and bulbs are low-voltage products that operate at either 12V or 24V. This means a 240V mains supply will be too great for them to handle.
Fortunately, this means they’re a lot more energy-efficient than incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs. However, old “Leading Edge” dimmer switches will cause LEDs to short out and malfunction.
As such, you may need to switch your dimmer switches for some new “Trailing Edge” ones in order to take full advantage of the benefits that LEDs bring.
Indeed, it would be a great shame if your existing dimmer switches were to ruin your opportunity to save up to 90% on your lighting energy bills and to experience such a long-lasting light source as LED.
We have a wide selection of LED-friendly, trailing-edge dimmer switches on sale here at LED Monkey, so why not peruse our range right away?
Should you wish to keep your existing dimmer switch face-plates, you could always just replace the dimming module at the back. We have a standard-sized, LED-friendly dimmer module that’ll be just the ticket if this is the case!
